A1.1 · fillBlank
A1.1 · Zahlen ab 100: Preise, Jahre, Mengen
Rents, prices of bikes and phones, distances, the year you were born: from here on the numbers get long, and German writes them as one word — 650 is sechshundertfünfzig, 1.200 is tausendzweihundert. The good news is that nothing new is hidden inside them. You say the hundreds, then the last two digits exactly as you learnt them, with the unit first: 385 = dreihundert-fünfundachtzig. Thousands work the same way: 8.500 = achttausend-fünfhundert. Two things are different from English. First, German marks thousands with a full stop and decimals with a comma: 1.200 means twelve hundred, 1,20 means one point two. Second, years before 2000 are said in hundreds: 1998 is neunzehnhundertachtundneunzig, never 'tausendneunhundert…'; from 2000 on you say zweitausend: 2020 = zweitausendzwanzig.
Hundreds + the number you already know
Say how many hundreds, then the last two digits the German way (unit + und + ten). All of it is one word; ein before hundert and tausend is optional.
- Die Wohnung kostet sechshundertfünfzig Euro. The flat costs 650 euros.
- Das Buch hat vierhundertsechzehn Seiten. The book has 416 pages.
Do not insert spaces or an extra und after hundert: sechshundertfünfzig, not "sechshundert und fünfzig".
Thousands: the full stop is not a decimal point
1.200 = tausendzweihundert (also zwölfhundert). 8.500 = achttausendfünfhundert. 20.000 = zwanzigtausend. A comma is the decimal point: 1,5 Kilo = one and a half kilos.
- Die Halle hat tausendzweihundert Plätze. The hall has 1,200 seats.
- Die Stadt hat zwanzigtausend Einwohner. The town has 20,000 inhabitants.
In English 1.200 is 'one point two'. In German it is twelve hundred.
Years: hundreds before 2000, zweitausend after
1965 = neunzehnhundertfünfundsechzig. 1998 = neunzehnhundertachtundneunzig. 2020 = zweitausendzwanzig. And a year stands alone: Ich bin 1998 geboren — no in.
- Mein Vater ist neunzehnhundertfünfundsechzig geboren. My father was born in 1965.
- Meine Tochter ist zweitausendzwanzig geboren. My daughter was born in 2020.
Read from the left, flip the last two
Take 585: fünfhundert (left) + fünfundachtzig (flip the 8 and the 5). Only the last pair is ever flipped.
- 585 → fünfhundert + fünfundachtzig 500 + 85
- 199 → hundert + neunundneunzig 100 + 99
How to remember it
- One number, one word: sechshundertfünfzig, tausendzweihundert.
- Years before 2000 in hundreds (neunzehnhundert…), after 2000 with zweitausend.
