Schreiben: Eine kurze Nachricht

Lesson · 3 rules · about 5 min

Cancel an evening in German, politely, and have the message corrected.

  1. 1The modal verb opens the bracket, the other verb closes it
  2. 2denn gives the reason and changes nothing
  3. 3Say when, not just that
Why this matters

A real message, the kind you send most often: you cannot make it, here is why, how about another day. You write it here in the box and the app builds a correction request that carries your own text. Aim for 120 to 300 characters. The grammar this exercise watches is the modal verb bracket: können takes second place and the other verb goes right to the end of the sentence. Get that right and the message is already most of the way there.

Write a short message to a friend: you cannot come this evening. Say that you cannot come, say why, suggest another day, and ask whether that suits them.

  • an informal greeting and sign-off
  • say you cannot come, with the modal verb können
  • give the reason with denn (denn ich muss arbeiten) or with a time phrase (Ich habe heute Abend keine Zeit)
  • suggest another day with a time expression (am Freitag, morgen Abend)
  • end with a question
