A1.2 · fillBlank
A1.2 · Wohin? — nach, zu, in
Wo? asks where something is; Wohin? asks where it is going — and German answers the second question with three different prepositions. nach is for towns and for countries without an article (nach Berlin, nach Spanien) and for home (nach Hause). in is for countries that have an article (in die Schweiz, in die USA) and for places you go into: ins Kino, in die Stadt, in den Park, in die Schule. zu is for people (zu Anna, zu meiner Oma) and for places you go to rather than into — zum Arzt, zur Arbeit, zum Bahnhof. After in the article is accusative (in den Park), after zu it is dative (zum = zu dem, zur = zu der); at A1 you learn these as chunks. The contrast with Wo? is the heart of it: ich bin zu Hause, but ich gehe nach Hause; ich bin im Kino, but ich gehe ins Kino.
nach — cities, countries without article, home
nach Berlin, nach Wien, nach Spanien, nach Deutschland — and nach Hause. No article ever follows nach here.
- Wir fahren morgen nach Berlin. We're going to Berlin tomorrow.
- Es ist spät. Ich gehe jetzt nach Hause. It's late. I'm going home now.
English 'to' covers all three. 'Ich gehe zu Berlin' or 'nach Kino' are the classic errors.
in + article — into a place, and countries with an article
ins Kino (in das), in die Stadt, in den Park, in die Schule — and in die Schweiz, in die Türkei, in die USA. The masculine article becomes den.
- Heute Abend gehen wir ins Kino. Tonight we're going to the cinema.
- Am Sonntag gehen wir in den Park. On Sunday we're going to the park.
zu — people and destinations
zu Anna, zu meiner Oma; zum Arzt, zum Bahnhof (zu dem), zur Arbeit, zur Schule (zu der). zu is also what you use when you do not go inside: zum Bahnhof, zur Post.
- Ich bin krank. Ich muss zum Arzt. I'm ill. I have to go to the doctor's.
- Am Samstag fahre ich zu meiner Oma. On Saturday I'm going to my grandma's.
nach Hause vs zu Hause
nach Hause answers Wohin? (going home); zu Hause answers Wo? (being at home). The same pairs: im Kino / ins Kino, in der Stadt / in die Stadt.
- Ich gehe nach Hause. – Ich bin zu Hause. I'm going home. – I'm at home.
- Ich gehe ins Kino. – Ich bin im Kino. I'm going to the cinema. – I'm at the cinema.
How to remember it
- nach for towns, countries and home · in for into (ins Kino, in den Park) · zu for people and places you go to (zum Arzt).
- Going home = nach Hause; being at home = zu Hause.

Mistakes English speakers make
- Ich gehe nach Kino. → Ich gehe ins Kino. nach is only for towns, countries without an article and home; a building you go into takes in.
- Ich fahre zu Berlin. → Ich fahre nach Berlin. Towns and cities take nach.
- Ich gehe zu Hause. → Ich gehe nach Hause. zu Hause is where you are; nach Hause is where you are going.
A1 Sprechen Teil 2 (cards like 'Wochenende' or 'Urlaub': Wohin fährst du?) and Hören (Wohin geht Anna?) — every destination answer is one of these chunks.
Wohin?
Wohin fährst du im Sommer? – . (Spanien)
Where are you going in summer? – To Spain.
