B1.1 · fillBlank
B1.1 · falls, da, trotzdem
Three connectors round off the B1 set of reasons, conditions and contrasts. falls means "if / in case" and is a more careful wenn for a condition that may or may not happen: Falls du Hilfe brauchst, ruf mich an. Nimm einen Schirm mit, falls es regnet (in case — here wenn would not work). da means "as / since" and gives a reason the listener already knows or can accept; it usually opens the sentence: Da heute Feiertag ist, sind die Geschäfte geschlossen. Both falls and da are subordinating conjunctions like weil and obwohl: the verb goes to the end. trotzdem means "nevertheless / anyway" and is the partner of obwohl: the same contrast, but an adverb, so it takes position 1 or sits in the middle and the verb stays second: Es regnete. Trotzdem gingen wir spazieren. = Obwohl es regnete, gingen wir spazieren. Its opposite partner is deshalb (that’s why). The quiz mixes all of them, so read the verb position before you choose.
falls = if / in case (verb last)
Falls du Zeit hast, komm vorbei. falls stresses that the condition is uncertain; in most sentences wenn also works. Only falls means "in case": Nimm einen Schirm mit, falls es regnet.
- Falls Sie noch Fragen haben, schreiben Sie mir bitte eine E-Mail. If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail.
- Nimm einen Schirm mit, falls es später regnet. Take an umbrella in case it rains later.
da = as / since (verb last), usually first
Da ich kein Auto habe, fahre ich mit dem Rad. da gives a known reason and is more written than weil. A da-clause normally comes first; the main clause then starts with its verb.
- Da heute Feiertag ist, sind alle Geschäfte geschlossen. As today is a public holiday, all the shops are closed.
- Da der Zug Verspätung hatte, kam ich zu spät zur Besprechung. As the train was late, I was late for the meeting.
German da has nothing to do with English 'there' in this use — and 'since' in the time sense is seit, not da.
obwohl ↔ trotzdem, weil ↔ deshalb
obwohl and weil send the verb to the end. trotzdem and deshalb are adverbs: in position 1 they are followed directly by the verb. Obwohl er wenig Geld hat, fährt er in Urlaub. = Er hat wenig Geld. Trotzdem fährt er in Urlaub.
- Er hat wenig Geld. Trotzdem fährt er jedes Jahr in Urlaub. He has little money. Nevertheless he goes on holiday every year.
- Ich bin sehr müde, deshalb gehe ich heute früh ins Bett. I am very tired, so I am going to bed early today.
'Trotzdem wir gingen spazieren' copies English word order. After trotzdem the verb comes immediately: Trotzdem gingen wir spazieren.
Look at the verb first
Verb at the end of the gap’s clause → a conjunction (falls, da, weil, obwohl, wenn). Verb right after the gap → an adverb (trotzdem, deshalb). Then choose by meaning.
- Wir sind trotzdem bis zum Ende geblieben. We stayed until the end all the same.
- Obwohl er wenig Geld hat, fährt er jedes Jahr in Urlaub. Although he has little money, he goes on holiday every year.
How to remember it
- falls, da, obwohl, weil: verb last. trotzdem, deshalb: verb second.
- in case = falls; as/since (reason) = da.
Reason, condition, contrast
| meaning | conjunction (verb last) | adverb (verb second) |
|---|---|---|
| reason | weil, da | deshalb, deswegen, darum |
| contrast | obwohl | trotzdem, dennoch |
| condition | wenn, falls | — |

In context
Liebe Nina, da ich am Samstag umziehe, kann ich leider nicht zu deiner Party kommen. Ich habe zwar viel Hilfe, trotzdem wird es ein langer Tag. Falls du am Sonntag Zeit hast, können wir zusammen frühstücken – obwohl die Wohnung dann bestimmt noch chaotisch ist! Sag mir Bescheid, falls es klappt. Liebe Grüße, Jana
Dear Nina, as I am moving on Saturday, unfortunately I cannot come to your party. I do have a lot of help, but it will still be a long day. If you have time on Sunday, we can have breakfast together – although the flat will surely still be chaotic then! Let me know if it works out. Best wishes, Jana
Mistakes English speakers make
- Es regnete. Trotzdem wir gingen spazieren. → Es regnete. Trotzdem gingen wir spazieren. trotzdem in position 1 is followed directly by the verb.
- Da ich kein Auto habe, ich fahre mit dem Rad. → Da ich kein Auto habe, fahre ich mit dem Rad. After a fronted subordinate clause the main clause starts with the verb.
- Nimm einen Schirm mit, wenn es regnet. (meaning: in case) → Nimm einen Schirm mit, falls es regnet. 'in case' is falls.
B1 Schreiben Teil 1 and 3 (Da ich …, kann ich leider nicht …; Falls Sie Fragen haben, …) and Sprechen Teil 3 (Das ist teuer. Trotzdem finde ich …) — connectors with the right verb position are scored under text organisation.
