B1.2 · fillBlank
B1.2 · Zustandspassiv: Die Tür ist geschlossen
German has two passives, and English uses "is" for both. The werden-passive (Vorgangspassiv) describes an action in progress: Die Tür wird geschlossen — someone is closing it now. The sein-passive (Zustandspassiv) describes the state that results from the action: Die Tür ist geschlossen — it is closed, the action is over. The form is simple — sein + Partizip II at the end: ist geschlossen, sind reserviert, war geöffnet — and it is everywhere in everyday life: on signs (Heute geschlossen), in shops and restaurants (Alle Tische sind reserviert), in forms (Das Formular ist nicht vollständig ausgefüllt) and at home (Der Tisch ist gedeckt). The test is always the same: is something happening (werden), or is something finished and now in a state (sein)? Words like gerade, jetzt gleich and im Moment point to werden; schon, seit, noch, endlich and a description of the result point to sein. For a completed event in the past you still use wurde: Das Haus wurde 1910 gebaut. In this quiz you type the helper and the participle.
sein + Partizip II = the state after the action
Die Tür ist geschlossen. Der Tisch ist gedeckt. Alle Tische sind reserviert. The participle stands at the end like an adjective; sein agrees with the subject.
The table is already laid, we can eat.
Unfortunately all the tables are reserved for this evening.
English 'The door is closed' can mean the action or the state. German must choose: wird geschlossen (being closed) or ist geschlossen (is shut).
werden + Partizip II = the action in progress
Der Tisch wird gerade gedeckt — someone is laying it now. Ihr Computer wird gerade repariert — the work is going on. gerade and im Moment are the signal words.
Sit down already, the table is being laid right now.
Please wait a moment, your computer is being repaired right now.
In the past: war for a state, wurde for an event
Das Geschäft war geschlossen (when I got there, it was shut). Das Paket wurde gestern geliefert (the delivery happened yesterday). A date or a time of day usually means an event: wurde.
The parcel was delivered yesterday at ten, but I was not at home.
When we arrived, the museum was already closed.
Can you replace it with an adjective?
If fertig, offen or zu would fit, it is the state passive with sein: Die Tür ist geschlossen = Die Tür ist zu. If not, it is werden.
- Das Fenster ist seit gestern geöffnet. (= offen) The window has been open since yesterday.
- Die Hausaufgaben sind endlich erledigt. (= fertig) The homework is finally done.
How to remember it
- werden + participle = something is happening. sein + participle = it is done and stays that way.
- gerade → wird; schon / seit / endlich → ist.
