B2.1 · fillBlank
B2.1 · um … zu, ohne … zu, statt … zu oder dass?
Three pairs of clauses express purpose, a missing circumstance and a replacement, and each pair has an infinitive version and a finite version. Purpose: um … zu (same subject: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Wien zu studieren) or damit (different subjects: Die Eltern arbeiten, damit die Kinder studieren können). The choice is made by the subject: if the subject of both clauses is the same person, the infinitive is the natural choice; if it changes, only the dass-/damit-clause is possible. The infinitive version also demands the right form: zu before the infinitive (zu erreichen), inside a separable verb (einzuladen, aufzustehen), and at the very end of the clause.
Same subject → infinitive; new subject → damit / dass
Ich spare, um ein Auto zu kaufen (I save, I buy). Ich spare, damit meine Tochter ein Auto kaufen kann (I save, she buys). The infinitive has no subject of its own, so it can only borrow the main clause’s subject. damit can also be used with the same subject (Ich spare, damit ich ein Auto kaufen kann), but um … zu is the more natural choice there.
She studies every evening in order to pass the exam.
- Der Lehrer spricht langsam, damit alle ihn verstehen. The teacher speaks slowly so that everyone understands him.
English says "so that" and "in order to" and lets you choose freely.
ohne … zu = without doing (same subject): Er ging, ohne zu grüßen. ohne dass = without someone else doing: Er ging, ohne dass ihn jemand sah. statt / anstatt … zu = instead of doing: Statt zu lernen, spielte er. statt dass = instead of someone else doing: Statt dass er hilft, sieht er fern (also same subject, when the infinitive would be awkward).
She signed the contract without reading it.
Instead of the government acting, the discussion goes on.
Where zu goes
zu stands directly before the infinitive at the end: um den Zug zu erreichen. In separable verbs it moves inside: einzuladen, aufzustehen, abzuholen. With modal or perfect infinitives it goes before the last verb: um mitfahren zu können, ohne gefragt zu haben.
- Er ruft an, um sie einzuladen. He calls to invite her.
I am coming earlier so that I can help you tidy up.
Ask: who does the second action?
If the answer is "the same person", reach for um / ohne / statt … zu. If it is "someone else", reach for damit / ohne dass / statt dass. Then check that the finite verb of the dass-clause is at the end.
I stay at home to study. — I stay at home so that you can study.
He drove off without filling up. — He drove off without her noticing.
How to remember it
- Same subject → um / ohne / statt … zu; new subject → damit / ohne dass / statt dass.
- zu before the last infinitive; inside separable verbs (einzuladen).

In context
I have signed up for an evening course in order to develop professionally. My boss has covered the costs so that I don’t have to pay for everything myself. Instead of watching TV in the evening, I now sit in the course twice a week – and without my family complaining.
Mistakes English speakers make
The daughter is a new subject; the infinitive cannot take one.
- Er ging, ohne zu sich verabschieden. → Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden. zu stands directly before the infinitive.
- Ich rufe an, um sie zu einladen. → Ich rufe an, um sie einzuladen. In separable verbs zu goes between prefix and stem.
B2 Lesen Teil 4 (Sprachbausteine: um / damit / ohne dass are classic gaps) and Schreiben (purpose clauses in formal letters: …, damit Sie mein Anliegen prüfen können).
