B2.1 · fillBlank
B2.1 · je … desto / umso
je … desto (or je … umso) links two comparatives: the more one thing grows, the more the other does. Each half has its own word order. The je-half is a subordinate clause: je + comparative + subject + … + verb at the end (Je länger ich hier wohne). The desto-half is a main clause whose first position is desto + comparative, so the verb follows immediately and the subject comes after it (desto besser gefällt mir die Stadt). umso means exactly the same as desto and is slightly more formal. The comparative can be an adverb (besser, lieber, öfter) or can carry a noun with it (desto mehr Steuern, desto weniger Probleme). Short versions without verbs are common in headlines and sayings: Je höher der Preis, desto höher die Erwartungen. The halves can also be swapped: Die Aufgabe wird umso schwieriger, je länger man wartet — then the main clause comes first and je introduces the subordinate clause at the end.
je-half: verb last
je + comparative + subject + rest + finite verb: Je länger ich wohne … Je besser du vorbereitet bist … Je öfter ich den Text lese … It is a subordinate clause, so the finite verb is the last word.
- Je später es wird, desto müder werden die Kinder. The later it gets, the more tired the children become.
- Je mehr man übt, desto sicherer wird man. The more you practise, the more confident you become.
desto-half: comparative, then the verb
desto + comparative (+ noun) fills position 1; the finite verb follows, then the subject: desto schneller sind wir da · desto mehr Steuern zahle ich · desto weniger Probleme gibt es.
- Je früher wir losfahren, desto schneller sind wir da. The earlier we set off, the sooner we are there.
- Je genauer wir planen, umso weniger Probleme gibt es. The more precisely we plan, the fewer problems there are.
English keeps subject before verb ("the sooner we are there"). German inverts: desto schneller sind wir da — never "desto schneller wir sind da".
umso = desto; swapped order
umso replaces desto without any change: je …, umso … . With the main clause first, umso usually stays inside it and je follows: Die Aufgabe wird umso schwieriger, je länger man wartet.
- Je höher der Preis, umso höher die Erwartungen. The higher the price, the higher the expectations.
- Man lernt umso schneller, je mehr man spricht. You learn all the faster the more you speak.
Two comparatives, two word orders
First half ends with the verb; second half starts with desto + comparative + verb. Say it as a seesaw: Je mehr …, desto mehr.
- Je mehr, desto besser. The more, the better.
- Je älter, desto weiser. The older, the wiser.
How to remember it
- Je + Komparativ … Verb am Ende, desto/umso + Komparativ + Verb + Subjekt.
- umso = desto; main clause first: umso …, je …
je … desto — the two halves

| desto-Teil | desto/umso + Komparativ + Verb + Subjekt | desto besser gefällt es mir. |

In context
Je länger die Diskussion über das neue Stadion dauert, desto teurer wird das Projekt. Die Stadt argumentiert: Je mehr Besucher kommen, umso mehr profitieren Hotels und Restaurants. Die Anwohner sehen das anders – für sie gilt: Je näher das Stadion, desto lauter die Wochenenden.
The longer the discussion about the new stadium goes on, the more expensive the project becomes. The city argues: the more visitors come, the more hotels and restaurants profit. The residents see it differently – for them it means: the closer the stadium, the louder the weekends.
Mistakes English speakers make
- Je länger ich wohne hier, desto besser es gefällt mir. → Je länger ich hier wohne, desto besser gefällt es mir. je-half: verb last; desto-half: verb right after the comparative.
- Je mehr ich lerne, desto ich weiß mehr. → Je mehr ich lerne, desto mehr weiß ich. The comparative belongs directly after desto.
- Je mehr, je besser. → Je mehr, desto besser. The second half takes desto or umso, not je.
B2 Schreiben Teil 1 (argument: Je mehr …, desto …) and Lesen Teil 4 (Sprachbausteine: desto / umso / je as gaps).
