C2.1 · Konjunktiv II: Nuancen
At C2 the Konjunktiv II is no longer just “würde + infinitive” for unreal conditions; it carries shades of meaning that English expresses with modals, adverbs or intonation. This quiz drills seven of them in 17 sentences: the past modal with a double infinitive (hätte … sollen / müssen / können / dürfen), including its word order in subordinate clauses (dass er es hätte wissen müssen); near-misses with beinahe, fast and um ein Haar (Ich wäre beinahe gestürzt); unreal comparisons with als ob, als wenn and als + verb second (als hätte sie mich nie zuvor gesehen); wishes and regret (Hätte ich doch nur …!, Wenn er doch nur … wäre!); polite distance (Ich hätte da eine Frage; Wäre es möglich …?); unreal consequence after zu …, als dass; and the elevated condition “Wäre da nicht …”. Each gap is the decisive verb form; the cue gives the infinitive(s). Umlauts count: hatte and hätte, wusste and wüsste are different moods.
Past modal = hätte + double infinitive
For “should have / could have / ought to have done” German uses hätte + infinitive + modal infinitive (not a participle): Du hättest anrufen sollen. In a subordinate clause the finite hätte does NOT go to the very end — it moves in front of the two infinitives: …, dass er es hätte wissen müssen. The same applies to lassen, sehen and hören: …, dass sie ihn hätte gehen lassen.
- Rückblickend ist klar, dass der Vorstand die Risiken früher hätte erkennen müssen. In hindsight it is clear that the board ought to have recognised the risks earlier.
- So ein Fehler hätte nicht passieren dürfen. A mistake like that should never have happened.
“…, dass er es wissen müssen hätte” is wrong; “…, dass er es wissen hätte müssen” is heard in Austria and southern Germany but is not standard written German.
Near-miss: beinahe / fast / um ein Haar + Konjunktiv II past
Something that almost happened but did not is unreal, so precise German uses the Konjunktiv II past: Ich wäre beinahe gestürzt (I did not fall). “Ich bin beinahe gestürzt” is common in speech, but the Konjunktiv is the precise written form. Verbs of movement and change of state keep sein: wäre gestürzt, wäre gescheitert.
- Um ein Haar hätten wir den letzten Zug verpasst. We came within a whisker of missing the last train.
- Fast wäre das Projekt am Widerstand der Anwohner gescheitert. The project almost failed because of the residents’ opposition.
Unreal comparison: als ob / als wenn / als + verb second
Three equivalent frames: als ob and als wenn send the verb to the end; bare als pulls it up directly behind als. Present time: wäre, hätte, wüsste (or Konjunktiv I sei, habe, wisse in writing). Past time: hätte / wäre + participle.
- Er tut so, als ob er von nichts wüsste. He acts as if he knew nothing about it.
- Sie sah mich an, als hätte sie mich nie zuvor gesehen. She looked at me as though she had never seen me before.
After bare als the verb must follow immediately: “als sie hätte mich …” is wrong.
Wish, regret and polite distance
Wishes take doch (nur) and either verb-first order (Hätte ich doch nur …!) or wenn + verb-final order (Wenn er doch nur … wäre!). Politeness uses the Konjunktiv II to create distance, not unreality: Ich hätte da eine Frage; Wäre es möglich …?; Könnten Sie …? The indicative (Ich habe eine Frage) is correct but blunter.
- Hätte ich doch nur früher auf dich gehört! If only I had listened to you sooner!
- Wäre es möglich, den Termin auf Donnerstag zu verlegen? Would it be possible to move the appointment to Thursday?
zu …, als dass and “Wäre da nicht …”
zu + adjective, als dass states a consequence that does not follow, so the als dass-clause normally takes the Konjunktiv II: zu komplex, als dass man es erklären könnte. “Wäre da nicht …” is an elevated verb-first condition meaning “were it not for …”; the verb agrees with the noun that follows (Wären da nicht die Kosten …).
- Die Reform kam zu spät, als dass sie die Firma noch hätte retten können. The reform came too late to have saved the firm.
- Wären da nicht die hohen Mietkosten, würden wir sofort in die Stadt ziehen. Were it not for the high rents, we would move into town at once.
How to remember it
- hätte + infinitive + modal infinitive: Du hättest anrufen sollen.
- In a subordinate clause hätte stands before the two infinitives: dass er es hätte wissen müssen.
- What almost happened is unreal: Ich wäre beinahe gestürzt.
- als ob / als wenn … verb at the end; als + verb straight after: als hätte sie …
- hatte ≠ hätte, wusste ≠ wüsste, war ≠ wäre — the umlaut is the mood.

In context
In hindsight the city ought to have repaired the bridge long ago. In winter a lorry nearly broke through the railing, and afterwards those responsible acted as if they had never known anything about the cracks. Had it not been for the committed residents who kept sending photos, nothing would probably have happened to this day. “Would it be possible to see the documents?” a resident asked politely at the meeting – but the answer came too late for her to have changed anything.
Mistakes English speakers make
- Ich weiß, dass ich früher hätte kommen gesollt. → Ich weiß, dass ich früher hätte kommen sollen. With a dependent infinitive the modal stays an infinitive (Ersatzinfinitiv), never gesollt / gemusst / gekonnt.
- Ich weiß, dass er es wissen müssen hätte. → Ich weiß, dass er es hätte wissen müssen. With a double infinitive the finite verb moves in front of both infinitives in a subordinate clause.
- Ich bin beinahe gestürzt, aber es ist nichts passiert. → Ich wäre beinahe gestürzt. The fall did not happen; precise written German marks this with the Konjunktiv II past.
- Er tut so, als ob er von nichts wusste. → Er tut so, als ob er von nichts wüsste. wusste is the indicative past; the unreal comparison needs wüsste (or wisse).
C2 writing and reformulation tasks (rewrite a sentence without changing its meaning, e.g. a near-miss or a reproach) and C2 speaking, where precise hedging, regret and polite distance count towards grammatical range.
