C1.1 · Zweiteilige Konnektoren
Two-part connectors (zweiteilige Konnektoren) frame a pair of words, phrases or clauses and make the relation between them explicit: zwar … aber (concession), einerseits … andererseits (weighing), nicht nur … sondern auch and sowohl … als auch (addition), weder … noch (double negation), entweder … oder (alternative), je … desto/umso (proportion), teils … teils, bald … bald, mal … mal (alternation), zum einen … zum anderen (listing reasons). At C1 the difficulty is not the meaning but the word order: zwar, einerseits, weder, je and desto count as the first position of their clause, so the verb follows immediately (Weder hat die Firma reagiert, noch hat sie …), whereas aber, oder and sondern stand outside the clause and leave normal order intact (…, oder Ihr Antrag wird nicht bearbeitet). The je-part is a subordinate clause with the verb at the end; the desto-part is a main clause with the verb right after the comparative.
Position 1 or position 0?
zwar, einerseits/andererseits, weder/noch, entweder (optionally), zum einen/zum anderen and desto occupy position 1: the verb comes next. aber, oder, sondern and sowohl … als auch stand at position 0: subject and verb keep their normal order.
- Weder hat die Firma reagiert, noch hat sie die Unterlagen zurückgeschickt. The company neither responded nor sent back the documents.
- Entweder Sie zahlen bis Freitag, oder Ihr Antrag wird nicht bearbeitet. Either you pay by Friday or your application will not be processed.
aber cannot take position 1 of a clause: *aber lässt sie Fragen offen. Put it in the middle (sie lässt aber Fragen offen) or use jedoch / allerdings, which can stand at position 1.
je … desto / umso
je + comparative starts a subordinate clause (verb at the end); desto or umso + comparative starts the main clause and is followed directly by the verb.
- Je länger die Verhandlungen dauern, desto geringer wird die Chance auf eine Einigung. The longer the negotiations last, the smaller the chance of agreement.
- Je mehr Daten vorliegen, umso genauer wird die Prognose. The more data is available, the more precise the forecast.
Agreement
sowohl … als auch joins two subjects into a plural. With weder … noch and entweder … oder the verb usually agrees with the nearer subject; formal texts often prefer the plural after weder … noch.
- Sowohl die Stadt als auch das Land beteiligen sich an den Kosten. Both the city and the state contribute to the costs.
- Entweder der Vorsitzende oder seine Stellvertreterinnen leiten die Sitzung. Either the chairman or his deputies chair the meeting.
Register
bald … bald is literary, mal … mal everyday; teils … teils is neutral and frequent in reports; zum einen … zum anderen lists two reasons without contrast, einerseits … andererseits weighs two sides against each other.
- Zum einen fehlt es an Personal, zum anderen sind die Räume veraltet. For one thing there is a lack of staff, for another the premises are outdated.
- Einerseits bietet die Digitalisierung Chancen, andererseits birgt sie Risiken. On the one hand digitalisation offers opportunities, on the other it carries risks.
How to remember it
- weder, einerseits, zwar, zum einen, desto + comparative: the verb comes right after them.
- aber, oder, sondern: normal word order after them.
- sowohl A als auch B as subject → plural verb.
Two-part connectors and the verb position they trigger

| nicht nur … sondern auch | addition with emphasis | usually links phrases |
| sowohl … als auch / wie auch | addition | links phrases; two subjects → plural verb |
| weder … noch | double negation | with clauses both pos. 1 (verb follows) |
| entweder … oder | alternative | entweder pos. 0 or 1; oder pos. 0 |
| je … desto / umso | proportion | je: verb last; desto: verb follows the comparative |
| teils … teils · mal … mal · bald … bald | alternation | mostly link phrases |
| zum einen … zum anderen | listing two reasons | both pos. 1 (verb follows) |

In context
Die Umstellung auf digitale Akten hat sich zwar bewährt, sie bringt aber neue Probleme mit sich. Zum einen fehlt es an geschultem Personal, zum anderen sind die Programme teils veraltet, teils nicht miteinander kompatibel. Weder hat die Verwaltung ein Konzept vorgelegt, noch gibt es einen Zeitplan. Je länger man wartet, desto teurer wird die Lösung.
The switch to digital files has proved itself, admittedly, but it brings new problems. For one thing there is a lack of trained staff; for another the programs are partly outdated, partly incompatible with one another. The administration has neither presented a plan nor is there a timetable. The longer one waits, the more expensive the solution becomes.
Mistakes English speakers make
- Weder die Firma hat reagiert, noch … → Weder hat die Firma reagiert, noch … weder occupies position 1 when it opens a clause, so the verb follows it.
- Je länger die Verhandlungen dauern, desto die Chance wird geringer. → …, desto geringer wird die Chance. desto + comparative form one unit at position 1; the verb comes next.
- Sowohl die Stadt als auch das Land beteiligt sich. → Sowohl die Stadt als auch das Land beteiligen sich. Two subjects joined by sowohl … als auch take a plural verb.
- nicht nur die Kosten, aber auch die Emissionen → nicht nur die Kosten, sondern auch die Emissionen After nicht nur the second part is always sondern (auch), never aber.
C1 exam (modular: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen, each module can be taken separately) — Lesen Teil 1 (Sprachbausteine cloze): one half of a two-part connector is given and the other must be found; Schreiben Teil 1 (Forumsbeitrag with graph): einerseits … andererseits and zwar … aber structure the argument.
