Artikel im Nominativ

Lesson · 5 rules · about 5 min

Every German noun wears a der, die or das — learn the pair together and you'll never have to guess.

  1. 1der / die / das — and always learn them together
  2. 2ein for der and das, eine for die
  3. 3No article at all for jobs, nationalities and 'some'
  4. 4Endings that give the gender away
  5. 5kein, keine — “not a”, “no”
Why this matters

Every German noun belongs to one of three genders — masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das) — and the gender is not about meaning: das Mädchen (the girl) is neuter, der Tisch (the table) is masculine. There is no way round it: you learn every noun together with its article, like a first name and a surname. This quiz is the nominative, the form for the subject of a sentence and after sein: der Mann ist hier, das ist ein Mann. The indefinite article (a/an) is ein for der- and das-words and eine for die-words, and the plural of 'the' is always die, whatever the gender.
