A1.1 · 1 of 30

Zahlen 0–10

Lesson · 3 rules · about 4 min

Eleven little words — null to zehn — and every German number you will ever say is built from them.

  1. 1The eleven you build everything from
  2. 2eins when counting, ein before a noun
  3. 3z = ts, ei = eye, ie = ee
Why this matters

The numbers 0–10 are the foundation of every number you will ever say in German: 21 is ein-und-zwanzig, 300 is drei-hundert, 4.50 € is vier Euro fünfzig. Learn to say and spell each of the eleven by heart now, because they hide everywhere — in prices, phone numbers, ages, platform numbers and times — and people say them quickly. Two things to know from day one: the number 1 is eins when you count but ein/eine before a noun, and German z is always pronounced ts.
