W-Fragen

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Put a w-word first and the verb straight after it — German questions never need a 'do'.

  1. 1W-word, verb, subject
  2. 2wo, wohin, woher — three kinds of where
  3. 3wie does a lot of work
  4. 4Yes/no questions start with the verb; doch answers a negative one
Why this matters

W-questions ask for information — who, what, where, when, how, why — and almost all of the German ones begin with w: wer, was, wo, wann, wie, warum. The word order is fixed and simple: question word, then the verb, then the subject — Wo wohnst du? Woher kommt sie? English needs a helper ('where *do* you live?'); German does not, it just moves the verb forward. The one place English speakers stumble is 'where', which German splits into three: wo (at what place), wohin (to what place) and woher (from what place).
