Einkaufen: Mengen & Preise

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Buy cheese, bread and a bottle of wine at a German market, and understand exactly what the seller says it costs.

  1. 1Measure + thing, no 'of'
  2. 2Weights and volumes
  3. 3Prices
  4. 4The shop script
Why this matters

Shopping needs two small word groups of its own: measures and weights, and money. German measures are simpler than English ones in one way — there is no 'of': ein Kilo Äpfel, eine Flasche Wasser, ein Stück Kuchen, the thing follows the measure directly — and stricter in another: the measures are nouns with a gender (das Kilo, der Liter, die Flasche, das Stück, die Packung, die Dose, das Glas, die Tasse, das Pfund = 500 g). Prices are euros then cents with no word for the comma: zwei Euro fünfzig; Euro never takes an s. Learn the shop's questions and answers as a script and you can buy anything.
