C2.2 · Fremdwörter und Latinismen
Educated German (Bildungssprache) draws on a stock of Latin-derived words and phrases that rarely occur in everyday talk but run through every quality newspaper, court judgment and academic text: evident, eruieren, obsolet, prekär, konzedieren, implizieren, subsumieren, stringent, sukzessive, and set Latin phrases such as a priori, de facto, per se, ad hoc, Status quo and sui generis. At C2 you must read them without hesitation and use them precisely in your own essays. In this quiz the German line above each sentence gives a plain paraphrase and the cue gives the English; type the Fremdwort, inflected to fit the sentence (prekären, konzediert, eruiert). Adjectives and verbs follow normal German grammar; the Latin phrases never inflect. Watch out for false friends with English: eventuell means possibly, not eventually, and konsequent means consistent, not consequent.
German grammar on Latin stems
Verbs in -ieren are regular and take no ge- in the Partizip II: eruieren → eruiert, konzedieren → konzediert, implizieren → impliziert, subsumieren → subsumiert. Adjectives take normal endings: unter prekären Bedingungen, eine stringente Argumentation, ein obsoletes Verfahren. Nouns keep their gender: das Desiderat, die Prämisse, der Status quo, das Diktum.
- Die Ursache des Ausfalls konnte bislang nicht eruiert werden. The cause of the outage has not yet been ascertained.
- Die Autorin konzediert, dass ihre Stichprobe klein ist. The author concedes that her sample is small.
geeruiert or gekonzediert do not exist: verbs in -ieren never take ge-.
Latin phrases stay invariable
a priori (von vornherein), a posteriori (aus der Erfahrung, im Nachhinein), de facto (tatsächlich) vs de jure (rechtlich), per se (an sich), ad hoc (eigens, spontan), sui generis (eigener Art), Status quo (bestehender Zustand), ceteris paribus (unter sonst gleichen Bedingungen). They take no endings; only Status quo behaves like a noun with an article: den Status quo wahren.
- De jure ist der Präsident Oberbefehlshaber, de facto entscheidet das Parlament. In law the president is commander-in-chief; in practice parliament decides.
- Ob sich die Maßnahme bewährt, lässt sich erst a posteriori beurteilen. Whether the measure proves itself can only be judged in retrospect.
Precision, not decoration
Each Fremdwort says something the everyday word does not quite say. evident is stronger than klar; stringent describes the logic of an argument, not its strictness; marginal means negligible in extent; ambivalent means torn between two feelings, not indifferent; kontraproduktiv means working against one’s own goal. Use one where it sharpens the statement — a sentence stuffed with Latinisms reads as pompous.
- Die Unterschiede sind marginal und ändern nichts am Ergebnis. The differences are negligible and change nothing about the result.
- Ein Boykott wäre in dieser Phase kontraproduktiv. A boycott would be counter-productive at this stage.
ambivalent is not indifferent (gleichgültig): an ambivalent person feels two things at once.
Beware of English look-alikes
Several Latinate words mean something different in German. eventuell = possibly (eventually = schließlich); konsequent = consistent, rigorous (consequent = folgend); sensibel = sensitive (sensible = vernünftig); prägnant = concise (pregnant = schwanger); rentabel = profitable. Check every look-alike before you use it in an essay.
- Die Regierung hat die Reform konsequent umgesetzt. The government implemented the reform consistently.
- Wir kommen eventuell etwas später. We may possibly come a bit later.
How to remember it
- Verbs in -ieren: no ge- in the Partizip II (eruiert, konzediert, impliziert).
- Adjectives inflect normally (unter prekären Bedingungen); Latin phrases never do (a priori, de facto, per se, ad hoc).
- Use a Fremdwort for precision, not decoration — one per sentence is usually enough.
- False friends: eventuell = possibly, konsequent = consistent, sensibel = sensitive.

In context
That the previous funding practice is obsolete is regarded among experts as self-evident. What is disputed, by contrast, is how it should be replaced. The commission is first to ascertain which businesses actually benefit; only then can the premise that subsidies promote innovation in themselves be tested. Even the supporters concede that a rigorous evaluation has so far remained a desideratum. The changeover is therefore to take place gradually and not at short notice.
Mistakes English speakers make
- Die Zahl der Betroffenen wurde geeruiert. → Die Zahl der Betroffenen wurde eruiert. Verbs in -ieren form the Partizip II without ge-.
- Nach langem Streit einigten sie sich eventuell. → Nach langem Streit einigten sie sich schließlich. eventuell means possibly; for eventually German uses schließlich or letztendlich.
- unter prekär Bedingungen → unter prekären Bedingungen A Latin-derived adjective before a noun takes the normal German ending.
- Die Bevölkerung ist dem Projekt gegenüber ambivalent, es ist ihr egal. → Die Bevölkerung ist dem Projekt gegenüber gleichgültig. ambivalent means torn between opposing feelings, not indifferent.
At C2 the reading paper’s academic and journalistic texts use Latinate vocabulary freely, and gap-fill and matching tasks test whether you can tell evident from eventuell or de facto from de jure. In the writing task, a few precise Fremdwörter raise the register of an essay — as long as they are used correctly and not piled up.
Fremdwort
offenkundig, klar ersichtlich
Dass die beiden Studien einander in zentralen Punkten widersprechen, ist . (obvious)
That the two studies contradict each other on central points is obvious.
