war & hatte

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Two short words, war and hatte, let you talk about yesterday, last week or your whole weekend.

  1. 1war — the past of sein
  2. 2hatte — the past of haben
  3. 3Not 'ich bin gewesen' in speech
  4. 4war and hatte are the past-tense skeleton
Why this matters

For 'was' and 'had', German does not use the Perfekt but a simpler past form, the Präteritum of sein and haben — war and hatte. Ich war krank (I was ill), Wir hatten keine Zeit (we had no time). You will use the ich- and er-forms most; this quiz gives you all six of each, because they are regular and you will hear the others constantly. sein: war, warst, war, waren, wart, waren. haben: hatte, hattest, hatte, hatten, hattet, hatten. Notice the shape: ich and er are identical, and the endings after that are the familiar -st, -en, -t, -en. From here on, 'yesterday I was …' is one word.
