Diktat: Steckbrief

Lesson · 3 rules · about 3 min

Hear a short sentence about someone and write it down perfectly, with capitals, ei and ie in the right places.

  1. 1Listen whole, write whole
  2. 2Capital nouns
  3. 3ei is eye, ie is ee, ß is ss
Why this matters

A dictation: you hear one sentence from a personal profile — Ich heiße Anna. Ich komme aus England. Ich bin zwanzig Jahre alt. — and type it. Play it as often as you need, hold the whole sentence in your head, then write it in one go. Two things are being trained at once. Your ear: telling heiße from heißen, bin from bist. And your spelling: German is written almost exactly as it is said, so once you can hear it you can write it — provided you remember that every noun takes a capital, that ei is the 'eye' sound and ie the 'ee' sound, and that ß is just a sharp s. The check is forgiving about umlauts and ß (ae, oe, ue and ss are accepted), but not about the words themselves.
