Wochentage & Monate

Lesson · 4 rules · about 6 min

Name any day, month or date in German, and say exactly when your birthday, appointment or holiday is.

  1. 1All masculine, all capital
  2. 2am for days, im for months and seasons
  3. 3The date: der erste, der zweite, der dritte …
  4. 4-s for habits
Why this matters

Days, months and seasons are all masculine — der Montag, der Januar, der Sommer — and all written with a capital letter, because they are nouns. Two small prepositions do most of the work: am for a day or part of a day (am Montag, am Morgen, am Wochenende) and im for a month or season (im Mai, im Winter). The date itself is said with an ordinal number and der: der erste März, der zwölfte April; and 'on' a date is am + -en: am ersten März. The four seasons and the four parts of the day complete the calendar: with them you can name any appointment, birthday or holiday. The last six items practise exactly that: der dritte Mai, but am zwölften Juni — after am the ordinal takes -en.
