Hear halb acht and know it means 7:30 — and never turn up an hour late to a German appointment again.
- 1halb looks forward
- 2nach and vor
- 3The official clock: digits, 24 hours
- 4Asking and answering
Why this matters
There are two clocks in German. The official one reads the digits and is used for timetables, appointments and anything written: vierzehn Uhr dreißig, neun Uhr fünfzehn. The colloquial one is what people actually say: Viertel nach acht (quarter past eight), Viertel vor neun (quarter to nine), fünf nach zehn — and halb, which is the one that trips English speakers, because halb drei means half *of the way to* three, i.e. 2:30, not 3:30. You will hear both every day — on the radio, at the station, from friends — and you should be able to switch: hear halb acht, write 7:30. Both are accepted in this quiz: type Viertel nach acht or acht Uhr fünfzehn for 08:15, halb drei or vierzehn Uhr dreißig for 14:30 — the reference table shows the two side by side.

halb looks forward
halb drei = 2:30, halb acht = 7:30, halb zwölf = 11:30. The number after halb is the hour you are heading towards.
- halb acht 7:30
- halb drei 2:30
- Der Film beginnt um halb acht. The film starts at 7:30.
- Es ist halb eins. It's 12:30.
English 'half three' is 3:30. German halb drei is 2:30. This one makes people turn up an hour late.

nach and vor
nach = past, vor = to: Viertel nach acht (8:15), Viertel vor neun (8:45), zehn nach zwei (2:10), zwanzig vor sechs (5:40). The minutes always come first: fünf nach zehn is 10:05, zehn nach fünf is 5:10. Adding Minuten is fine too (fünf Minuten nach zehn), but there is no und — never zehn und fünf. In the south and east you will also hear zehn vor halb drei (2:20) and drei Viertel elf (10:45); the quiz accepts those as well.
- fünf nach neun 9:05
- Viertel nach neun 9:15
- Viertel vor zehn 9:45
- zehn vor zehn 9:50
- Es ist fünf nach zehn. It's five past ten.
- Der Bus kommt um zwanzig vor sechs. The bus comes at twenty to six.
Quick check
It's 9:50. Es ist zehn zehn.

The official clock: digits, 24 hours
Read exactly what is written: 14:30 = vierzehn Uhr dreißig; 09:15 = neun Uhr fünfzehn; 1:00 = ein Uhr (not eins). Always understood, never wrong — use it when unsure.
