A1.2 · 12 of 36

Wann? — Zeitangaben

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Say exactly when things happen, at eight, on Monday, in March, from tomorrow, with the little word each time needs.

  1. 1um · am · im
  2. 2Spans: von … bis, ab, für
  3. 3Before, after, and 'in' the future
  4. 4No preposition for years
Why this matters

Saying when is something you do in almost every conversation, and it hangs on a handful of prepositions that each own a kind of time: um for clock times (um acht Uhr), am for days and parts of the day (am Montag, am Morgen, am Wochenende), im for months and seasons (im März, im Sommer), and in der Nacht as the one exception. For spans and points around them: von … bis (from … to), ab (from … on), für (for a length of time — often left out: zwei Wochen), nach (after), vor (before), and in for the future (in einer Woche = in a week’s time). Years stand alone: Ich bin 1995 geboren, with no preposition. Each item gives you the time word in brackets; type the whole time phrase, preposition included.
