- From "mir, dir, Ihnen": the dative pronouns for me, you and formal you.
- New today
- The whole set — ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen — and the verbs that take them.
- 1The nine forms
- 2gefallen, schmecken, gehören, passen — the thing is the subject
- 3ihr / ihnen / Ihnen
- 4After a dative preposition
Why this matters
The dative pronouns are the receiver forms: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, ihm, uns, euch, ihnen, Ihnen. You met the most common of them early on (Wie geht es dir? Kannst du mir helfen?); now they become a system, used after the dative verbs (geben, helfen, danken, gefallen, gehören, schmecken, zeigen) and the dative prepositions (mit mir, bei ihm, von ihr). Two look-alikes to keep apart: ihr is 'to her' (and also 'you all' as a subject), ihnen is 'to them', and Ihnen with a capital is the formal 'to you'. And the pronoun that changes meaning most is ihm: it is both 'to him' and 'to it' for a der- or das-word.

gefallen, schmecken, gehören, passen — the thing is the subject
Das Buch gefällt mir (I like the book). Die Suppe schmeckt ihm (he likes the soup). Der Schlüssel gehört ihr (the key is hers). Die Jacke passt dir (the jacket fits you). The person is dative, the thing is nominative and rules the verb.
| English | German | |
|---|---|---|
| I like the city. | ⇄ | Die Stadt gefällt mir. |
| He likes the soup. | ⇄ | Die Suppe schmeckt ihm. |
| The bag is hers. | ⇄ | Die Tasche gehört ihr. |
- Gefallen dir die Schuhe? – Ja, sie gefallen mir sehr. Do you like the shoes? – Yes, I like them a lot.
- Die Suppe schmeckt ihm nicht, aber der Kuchen schmeckt ihm. He doesn't like the soup, but he likes the cake.
'I like it' comes out as 'it pleases me'. The liker is never the subject with gefallen.
