Dativpräpositionen

aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu: learn one short chant and you never have to guess the case after them again.
- 1aus – bei – mit – nach – seit – von – zu
- 2The contractions
- 3nach vs zu: where you're going
- 4seit: since / for — with the present tense
Why this matters
Nine prepositions always take the dative, no matter what the sentence does: aus (out of, from), bei (at someone's, near), mit (with, by), nach (after, to a place), seit (since, for a time), von (from, of), zu (to a person or place), gegenüber (opposite — before or after the noun: gegenüber dem Bahnhof / dem Bahnhof gegenüber) — and außer (except). They are the mirror image of the accusative five you already know. Four of them usually fuse with the definite article in everyday speech: bei dem → beim, von dem → vom, zu dem → zum, zu der → zur. These are the chunks you learnt at the start (beim Arzt, zum Bahnhof, vom Bahnhof) — now you see the system behind them, and you can build any new one.

The contractions
beim (bei dem), vom (von dem), zum (zu dem), zur (zu der). With a definite article these short forms are the normal choice: zum Bahnhof, zur Schule, beim Arzt, vom Markt. The long form is kept when you point at one particular thing: zu dem Arzt, der mir geholfen hat.
- zu+ dem = zum zum Bahnhof
- zu+ der = zur zur Schule
- von+ dem = vom vom Arzt
- bei+ dem = beim beim Bäcker
- Ich gehe zum Arzt und dann zur Apotheke. I'm going to the doctor and then to the pharmacy.
- Kommst du gerade vom Bäcker? – Nein, vom Markt. Have you just come from the baker's? – No, from the market.

nach vs zu: where you're going
I'm going to Munich and there I'm visiting a friend.
- Wir fliegen nach Spanien und fahren dann zu meinen Großeltern. We're flying to Spain and then driving to my grandparents'.
English 'to' covers all of these. 'Ich gehe zu Berlin' or 'nach dem Arzt' are the classic errors.
