Woher? Wo? Wohin?
Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min
Say where someone is, where they're going and where they've come from — im Kino, ins Kino, aus dem Kino.
- 1Places you enter: aus – in – in
- 2People and activities: von – bei – zu
- 3Cities and countries: aus – in – nach
- 4Home: zu Hause vs nach Hause
Why this matters
Three questions, three prepositions, three cases — and one table that answers all of them. For a place you can be inside (Kino, Schule, Supermarkt): Woher? aus dem / aus der — Wo? im / in der — Wohin? ins / in die / in den. For people, activities and the doctor (Anna, Arzt, Sport, Arbeit): von — bei — zu: vom Arzt, beim Arzt, zum Arzt. Cities and most countries: aus Berlin — in Berlin — nach Berlin; countries with an article keep it: aus der Schweiz — in der Schweiz — in die Schweiz. And home is its own set: von zu Hause — zu Hause — nach Hause. Whether you say gehe or fahre depends only on how you get there (on foot or by vehicle); the preposition does not change: Ich gehe ins Kino, ich fahre nach Berlin. The Wo? column is dative, the Wohin? column with in is accusative — that is the two-way preposition rule that comes later in the course, seen here through its most common examples.

Places you enter: aus – in – in
Woher? aus dem Kino / aus der Schule. Wo? im Kino / in der Schule. Wohin? ins Kino / in die Schule / in den Park. The accusative (ins, in die, in den) means you are going in.
- aus aus dem Kino woher? + Dat
- in im Kino wo? + Dat
- in ins Kino wohin? + Akk
- Ich gehe ins Kino. Ich bin im Kino. Ich komme aus dem Kino. I'm going to the cinema. I'm at the cinema. I'm coming from the cinema.
- Die Kinder gehen in die Schule. Um eins kommen sie aus der Schule. The children go to school. At one they come out of school.
'in the cinema' is one phrase in English for both being there and going there. German switches im (dative, Wo?) and ins (accusative, Wohin?).
