Sprechen: Nach dem Weg fragen

Lesson · 3 rules · about 3 min

Find any station, post office or museum in a German town with one question — Wie komme ich zum …? — and follow the answer.

  1. 1zum or zur
  2. 2The four direction words
  3. 3Repeat it back
Why this matters

Asking the way and understanding the answer — twelve lines of one conversation at a street corner, to listen to and repeat. The question is always the same: Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum / zur …? (zum for der/das places, zur for die places). The answer uses the formal imperative and four direction words: geradeaus (straight on), links, rechts, an der Ecke (at the corner) — Gehen Sie hier geradeaus. Dann biegen Sie links ab. Then the listener repeats the directions back to confirm them. Say the question until it is automatic; in every German town it is the sentence you will use most.

Phrase 1 of 12
