Why this matters
Weather is the safest small talk there is — at the bus stop, in the lift, at the start of every phone call. German talks about the weather with es and a verb — es regnet, es schneit, es ist sonnig / windig / kalt / heiß — and gives the temperature in Grad: zwanzig Grad, minus fünf Grad. Change is es wird + comparative: es wird wärmer, es wird kälter. The seasons are all der and take im (im Sommer). Learn the ten weather words, the four seasons and the two questions — Wie ist das Wetter? Wie viel Grad sind es? — and you have every conversation about the sky.
