Adjektive vor dem Nomen: erste Begegnung

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Say 'a new flat', 'a big kitchen' and 'the old table' with your first adjective endings, all built on one simple idea.

  1. 1After ein: the adjective shows the gender
  2. 2After der/die/das: just -e (or -en for a masculine object)
  3. 3One strong signal
  4. 4Plural and the ending -en
Why this matters

After sein an adjective has no ending: Der Tisch ist neu. Before a noun it takes one: ein neuer Tisch, eine neue Lampe, ein neues Haus. This is the first meeting with adjective endings — the full system with all cases comes later in the course and is a real cliff — and it is deliberately small: nominative and accusative only, after ein and after der. Two patterns cover it. After ein, the adjective shows the gender because ein cannot: ein neuER Tisch, eine neuE Lampe, ein neuES Haus (and as an object: einen neuEN Tisch). After der/die/das the article already shows the gender, so the adjective just takes -e: der neue Tisch, die neue Lampe, das neue Haus (and den neuen Tisch as an object). Read them, say them, copy them; understanding why comes later.
