Imperativ

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Ask, tell and invite — Nimm!, Seid leise!, Nehmen Sie doch Platz! — with the forms that trip most learners up.

You already know
From the first "Imperativ": Komm!, Kommt!, Kommen Sie!
New today
The forms that trip people up: Nimm!, Lies!, Sei!, and softening with bitte, doch and mal.
  1. 1du: the stem, and the e → i change stays
  2. 2ihr and Sie
  3. 3sein and haben
  4. 4Softening: bitte, doch, mal
Why this matters

You met the three imperatives earlier in the course; here they are consolidated with the forms that catch people out. du: stem only, no pronoun (Komm! Mach!), stems in -t/-d take -e (Warte! Öffne!), e → i verbs keep the change (Nimm! Gib! Iss! Lies! Sprich! Hilf!), a → ä verbs do not (Fahr! Schlaf! Lauf!). ihr: the present ihr-form without ihr (Kommt! Lauft! Seid!). Sie: infinitive + Sie (Warten Sie! Bringen Sie!), with sein irregular (Seien Sie!). And the two odd verbs: sein → Sei! Seid! Seien Sie!; haben → Hab! Habt! Haben Sie! The imperative is also how German gives advice softly with bitte, doch or mal: Komm doch mal vorbei.
