Why this matters

Two forms of the Konjunktiv II are used so constantly for suggestions and advice that learners meet them long before the Konjunktiv itself: könnte (could — a suggestion) and sollte (should — a piece of advice). Wir könnten ins Kino gehen. Du solltest mehr schlafen. They look like the past forms konnte / sollte with an umlaut on könnte, take the same endings (könnte, könntest, könnte, könnten, könntet, könnten), and behave like every modal: position 2, infinitive at the end. Together with the politeness chunks you already know (hätte gern, würde gern, Könnten Sie …?) they give you a whole polite register — proposing, advising, asking softly — without yet knowing the system behind it, which comes later in the course.
