Präteritum: erste Schritte
Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min
Fairy tales, novels and the news all tell their stories in the Präteritum. Learn to recognise it and those texts open up.
- 1Regular: stem + -te + endings
- 2Irregular: vowel change, no -te
- 3Where you meet it: stories and reports
- 4ich = er, and -te for the regulars
Why this matters
The Präteritum is the written past — the tense of stories, reports, fairy tales and newspapers: Es war einmal ein König. Er sagte … Sie ging … You already use it for war, hatte and the modals; now come kommen and sagen, and the skill of recognising it in reading. Regular verbs add -te to the stem and then the past endings: sagte, sagtest, sagte, sagten, sagtet, sagten (arbeitete with the helping e). Irregular verbs change their vowel and take no -te in ich/er: kam, gab, fand, sah, ging, fuhr, aß — and the plural adds -en: kamen, gaben, gingen. This is an introduction: for now you need to recognise these forms in stories and reports and produce them for the most common verbs; later in the course it becomes a tense you write in. The sentences here are the kind you will read — Früher gab es hier …, Der Lehrer sagte …
