Why this matters

Soon the explanations in this course switch to German, and German talks about its own grammar with its own words. The good news: you already know most of them. Nomen is a noun, Verb is a verb, Adjektiv is an adjective, Plural is a plural. Only a handful look new: die Endung (the ending), der Satz (the sentence), der Hauptsatz and der Nebensatz (main and subordinate clause). And you have used the four cases for months: each one simply answers its own question. Wer? is the Nominativ, wen? the Akkusativ, wem? the Dativ, wessen? the Genitiv. Learn these words once and every German grammar book, teacher and website is open to you.
