Passiv Präsens: Das wird gemacht

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Read signs like 'Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen' and say what gets done without naming who does it.

  1. 1werden + participle at the end
  2. 2Nobody in particular — or von + dative
  3. 3Where you'll read it
  4. 4werden is 'become': the thing becomes done
Why this matters

The passive says what is done without saying who does it: Das Auto wird repariert (the car is being repaired), Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen (German is spoken here). It is everywhere on signs, in instructions and in news — which is why you need to recognise it early. It is built from werden in position 2 and the participle (the same Partizip II as the Perfekt) at the end: wird … repariert, werden … verkauft. werden agrees with the subject: Das Brot wird gebacken. Die Brötchen werden gebacken. If you do want to name the doer, von + dative: Die Rechnung wird vom Chef bezahlt. Later in the course you will build the passive in the past and with modals; here you learn to read it and to produce the simplest present form — both halves of it: wird or werden in position 2, and the participle at the end.
