Why this matters

The superlative names the top of a group. Its adverbial form — after a verb, or with sein — is am …-sten: Er läuft am schnellsten. Im Winter sind die Tage am kürzesten. Adjectives ending in -t, -d, -z, -s or -sch take -esten so that you can hear the ending (am ältesten, am kürzesten, am leichtesten) — with one famous exception, groß → am größten; short a/o/u adjectives take the umlaut as in the comparative (am größten, am wärmsten, am jüngsten); and the irregular four follow their comparatives: gut → besser → am besten, viel → mehr → am meisten, gern → lieber → am liebsten, hoch → höher → am höchsten. Before a noun the superlative takes der/die/das and an ending — der schnellste Zug, das größte Haus — which you meet here as chunks and build later in the course.
