Vater, Mutter, Bruder, Freundin — the people words you will use every day, each learnt with its der, die or das.

Why this matters
Family and people words are among the first nouns you need — you introduce your family to new people, and you talk about your Bruder and your Freundin constantly. Learn each one with its article, because here the gender mostly follows the person: der Vater, die Mutter, der Sohn, die Tochter. Two exceptions show that German gender is grammar, not biology: das Kind and das Mädchen are neuter, because -chen words are always das. A pattern worth learning early: many people-words make their female form by adding -in — Freund → Freundin, Lehrer → Lehrerin, Student → Studentin — and the plural of these is -innen.
