Länder, Sprachen & Nationalitäten

Lesson · 5 rules · about 6 min

Where are you from, what do you speak, what are you — the three questions every new German conversation starts with.

  1. 1aus + country, no article
  2. 2The countries with an article
  3. 3Languages: capital, -isch, no article
  4. 4Nationalities are nouns, and take -in for women
  5. 5Norden, Süden, Osten, Westen
Why this matters

Where are you from, what do you speak, what are you — three of the first questions anyone asks, and three answers you will give again and again. Most country names have no article and take aus directly: aus Deutschland, aus Spanien. A handful are feminine or plural and keep their article, which then changes after aus: die Schweiz → aus der Schweiz, die Türkei → aus der Türkei, die USA → aus den USA. Languages are neuter nouns written with a capital (Deutsch, Englisch) and most end in -isch. Nationalities are people-nouns: Deutscher / Deutsche, Engländer / Engländerin, Franzose / Französin — and after sein they take no article: Ich bin Deutsche.
