Negation (kein/nicht)

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Say no the German way: kein for 'no money, no time', nicht for everything else, and put nicht in the right spot.

  1. 1kein for ein-nouns and bare nouns
  2. 2nicht for everything else
  3. 3Where nicht goes
  4. 4kein takes the ein-endings
Why this matters

English has one 'not' and one 'no'; German splits the job in two. kein negates a noun that would otherwise have ein or no article at all — it means 'not a', 'no', 'not any': Ich habe kein Auto, keine Zeit, keinen Hund. nicht negates everything else: a verb (Ich verstehe nicht), an adjective (Sie ist nicht müde), an adverb (nicht heute), and a noun that has a definite article or a possessive (Das ist nicht mein Auto). kein is an ein-word, so it takes the ein-endings — keinen for a masculine object. Where nicht goes is the other half: at the end of a simple sentence, but before the adjective, the adverb or the place it negates.
