Why this matters
A guest orders in a café: cake first, then a drink, then the bill — all of it only heard. Two people speaking is the new difficulty, so each line of the transcript starts with the speaker (Kellner, Gast). The waiter asks and names the price; the guest answers and pays. Keep a mental list as you listen: what is ordered, what is offered but refused, what it costs, what is paid. The ordering verbs are your signposts: nehmen and möchten (what is ordered), Was macht das? and Das macht … (the price). Listen once to get the two voices apart, then once for each question. The phrases here — Was möchten Sie? Ich nehme … Das macht … Stimmt so — are the script you will use yourself at every café table.

Waiter: Good afternoon! What would you like to order? Guest: I'll have a piece of apple cake, please. Waiter: Certainly. And something to drink? Guest: Yes, a coffee, please. Waiter: Would you like the coffee with milk? Guest: Yes please, with milk and sugar. Waiter: Would you like a glass of water too? Guest: No, thank you, just the coffee. Guest: Excuse me, I'd like to pay, please. How much is that? Waiter: That's four euros eighty. Guest: Here are five euros. Keep the change. Waiter: Thank you very much! Have a nice day!
