Personalpronomen (Akkusativ)

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Say 'I see him', 'she loves us' and 'do you have it?' in German — object pronouns are just a handful of small words.

  1. 1Five change, four stay
  2. 2'it' is ihn, sie or es
  3. 3sie, sie, Sie — again
  4. 4mich–dich–ihn, uns–euch
Why this matters

When a pronoun is the object of the verb it changes form, just as in English (I → me, he → him): Ich sehe dich, du siehst mich, wir kennen ihn. Five of the nine change completely — ich → mich, du → dich, er → ihn, wir → uns, ihr → euch — and four stay exactly as they were: sie (her), sie (them), es and Sie. The one that catches English speakers is 'it': a thing is er, sie or es by its gender, so 'I see it' is Ich sehe ihn for der Tisch, sie for die Lampe, es for das Buch. Choose the pronoun by the noun's gender, then put it in the accusative — which, for a der-word, means ihn.
