Why this matters
Sofia tells the story of last summer's trip to Italy — why she took the train, what she did on the way, where she stayed, what a day in Rome looked like, how the weather was, and how she came back. You hear it only. This is how people tell you about their holidays: a past event narrated in the Perfekt, and the questions follow the story in order. The tense is the challenge: the fact you need is often split — bin at the start, gefahren at the end — so you cannot answer until the sentence closes. Listen for the participle; it names the action. And catch the place words with their prepositions: mit dem Zug, nach Italien, bei einer Freundin, durch die Altstadt, nach einer Woche.
Translation
Hi, I'm Sofia. I'm going to tell you about my trip last summer. In July I went to Italy by train, because I don't like flying. The journey took eight hours, but it wasn't boring: I read and looked out of the window. In Rome I stayed with a friend. Her name is Giulia and she studies music there. We did a lot every day: in the morning we visited museums, in the afternoon we walked through the old town, and in the evening we ate pizza. The weather was very hot, almost forty degrees. That's why we often took a break at midday. On the last day we went to the sea and played in the water. After a week I came home again – tired, but very happy.
