Perfekt mit sein
Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min
Went, came, stayed, fell asleep: verbs that move you or change you take sein — learn that one rule and your past tense sounds right.
- You already know
- From "Perfekt: erste Schritte": fahren, bleiben and passieren take sein.
- New today
- The rule behind it: every verb of movement or change takes sein, and an object switches fahren back to haben.
- 1Movers and changers take sein
- 2The participles are mostly irregular
- 3An object means haben — even for fahren
- 4sein and bleiben: the two odd ones
Why this matters
A smaller group of verbs builds its Perfekt with sein instead of haben — and English speakers, who have only 'have', get this wrong for years unless they learn the rule early. The rule is short: verbs of movement from one place to another (gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, laufen, schwimmen, umziehen) and verbs of change of state (aufstehen, einschlafen, aufwachen, werden, sterben) take sein — plus three exceptions to learn by heart: sein (gewesen), bleiben (geblieben), passieren (passiert). Their participles are mostly irregular (gegangen, gefahren, gekommen, geworden). Everything else — including all verbs with an object — takes haben.
