Modalverben im Präteritum

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

„Ich konnte nicht, ich musste arbeiten“ — the past-tense excuse everyone needs, built from a few short, regular forms.

  1. 1Stem without umlaut + -te + endings
  2. 2Infinitive still at the end
  3. 3No Perfekt for modals in speech
  4. 4The umlaut goes
Why this matters

Like sein and haben, the modal verbs go into the simple past rather than the Perfekt when you talk about the past: Ich konnte nicht kommen (I couldn't come), Ich musste arbeiten (I had to work), Er wollte schlafen (he wanted to sleep). Nobody says 'ich habe kommen können' in everyday speech. The forms are regular and easy: the stem loses its umlaut (können → konn-, müssen → muss-, dürfen → durf-), takes -te, and adds the past endings: konnte, konntest, konnte, konnten, konntet, konnten. The main verb stays an infinitive at the end, exactly as in the present. With war and hatte they are almost the whole Präteritum of everyday speech.
