- 4You can drop dass in speech — but not the comma rule
Why this matters
dass (that) reports an idea, an opinion or a fact — Ich glaube, dass er recht hat; Sie sagt, dass sie morgen kommt — and it behaves exactly like weil: comma before it, verb at the very end of its clause. It follows the verbs of thinking, saying, knowing and hoping (denken, glauben, meinen, finden, wissen, hoffen, sagen) and expressions like Es ist gut, dass … / Schade, dass … Two spellings trip everyone: dass (the conjunction, double s) versus das (the article and the pronoun: das Buch, das ist gut). If you can replace it with dieses or welches, it is das; if it introduces a clause with the verb at the end, it is dass. Like weil, dass takes two verbs in the same order: participle or infinitive first, helper or modal as the very last word — …, dass du gekommen bist; …, dass du nicht kommen kannst. Four sentences here have two gaps for exactly that.

dass or das?
das = the / that / which (article, pronoun): Das Buch ist gut. Das ist toll. Das Buch, das ich lese. dass = that (conjunction, verb at the end): Ich weiß, dass du kommst. Test: can you say dieses/welches? Then das.
- yesdas Das Buch, das ich lese, ist gut.
- nodass Ich weiß, dass er kommt.
- Ich weiß, dass das Buch, das du liest, gut ist. I know that the book you're reading is good.
- Das ist das Buch, das ich lese. Ich hoffe, dass es dir gefällt. That's the book I'm reading. I hope you like it.
Both sound identical. In writing, das/dass confusion is one of the most common spelling errors — even among native speakers.

- Ich denke, das ist eine gute Idee. / Ich denke, dass das eine gute Idee ist. I think that is a good idea.

Ich glaube, dass es morgen regnet. Meine Mutter sagt, dass wir trotzdem wandern gehen. Ich finde, dass das keine gute Idee ist – schade, dass sie nie auf mich hört! Aber ich weiß, dass sie recht hat: Nach dem Regen ist es am schönsten.
I think it will rain tomorrow. My mother says we're going hiking anyway. I think that's not a good idea – a pity she never listens to me! But I know she's right: after the rain it's at its most beautiful.
