Why this matters
Jan leaves Lisa a voicemail proposing a plan for Saturday: what, when, why, how much it costs, where to meet, and what to bring. Heard only. A voicemail with a proposal is one of the most common messages a friend leaves you, and the questions map onto its parts: the activity (an exhibition), the reason (weil … verb at the end), the price (with an aber that changes it), the meeting place (vor dem Museum — a two-way preposition, dative because it is a position), and the request at the end (bring bitte … mit). Listen for the shape of a suggestion — Wir können …, Treffen wir uns …? — and catch each weil-clause to the end, because the verb that closes it names the reason.
Translation
Hi Lisa, it's me, Jan. I wanted to ask whether you have time on Saturday. There is a new exhibition at the art museum – photos of Berlin in the 1920s. I think you'll like it, because you're so interested in photography. We can go at three o'clock, because it's not so crowded then. In the morning there are always lots of school classes. Admission costs eight euros, but with a student card only four. Afterwards maybe we'll have a coffee in the café next to the museum – they have the best cake in town. Shall we meet at a quarter to three in front of the museum? Or shall I pick you up by car? Please call me back, or send me a message. Oh, and please bring your student card! See you Saturday, bye!
