Reflexive Verben

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Ich freue mich! Learn the little pronoun that bounces a verb back onto you, and tell someone about your day.

  1. 1The reflexive pronouns
  2. 2Verbs that are always reflexive
  3. 3Verbs that can be reflexive
  4. 4Where the pronoun goes
Why this matters

Some German verbs point the action back at the subject with a reflexive pronoun — mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich — where English uses nothing at all: Ich wasche mich (I wash), Ich freue mich (I'm glad), Wir treffen uns (we meet), Sie interessiert sich für Musik (she's interested in music). The pronouns are the accusative ones you know, except that er, sie, es and sie/Sie all use sich. Many everyday verbs are reflexive and have to be learnt with their pronoun: sich freuen, sich treffen, sich setzen, sich anziehen, sich beeilen, sich erinnern, sich ausruhen. You need them the moment you describe your daily routine or say how you feel.
