Verben mit Präposition: worauf? darauf!

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

In German you wait auf the bus and think an your holiday — learn each verb with its preposition and ask worauf? with ease.

  1. 1Learn the verb with its preposition and case
  2. 2auf vs über with sich freuen
  3. 3Asking about a thing: wo(r)- + preposition
  4. 4Answering without repeating: da(r)- + preposition
Why this matters

Many German verbs come with a fixed preposition that cannot be guessed from English: warten auf (wait for), sich interessieren für (be interested in), sprechen über (talk about), denken an (think of), träumen von (dream of), sich freuen auf (look forward to) versus sich freuen über (be pleased about), Angst haben vor (be afraid of). The preposition is part of the verb and is learnt with it, together with its case — mostly the accusative after auf, über, für, an; the dative after von, nach, vor, mit. To ask about a thing you glue wo(r)- to the preposition: Worauf wartest du? Wofür interessierst du dich? To answer without repeating it, glue da(r)-: Darauf. Dafür. (For people, you use the preposition plus a pronoun: Auf wen? Auf ihn.) This is an introduction: here you fill the preposition into real sentences, plus a few wo-/da- forms to recognise; later in the course it becomes a full system.
