Indirekte Fragen: ob & W-Wort

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Ask strangers anything, politely: wrap your question in 'Können Sie mir sagen, …?' and send the verb to the end.

  1. 1W-question → W-word + verb at the end
  2. 2Yes/no question → ob + verb at the end
  3. 3The openers
  4. 4Politeness by wrapping
Why this matters

An indirect question wraps a question inside a polite opener — Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? Wissen Sie, ob das Geschäft offen ist? — and it is the politest way to ask anything in German, which is why you will hear it at every counter, on every phone call and at every information desk. The grammar is the subordinate-clause rule you already have from weil and dass: the question becomes a clause with the verb at the end. A W-question keeps its W-word (wo, wann, wie, warum, was, wer); a yes/no question gets ob (whether). The openers are few: Können / Könnten Sie mir sagen, …? · Wissen Sie, …? · Weißt du, …? · Ich weiß nicht, … · Ich möchte wissen, …
