Why this matters

Twelve sentences describing a room, to listen to and repeat — all on the dative side of the two-way rule, because describing where things are — your flat to a new friend, a room to a flatmate — is what you actually do with it. Das Bett steht an der Wand. Der Tisch steht am Fenster. Say the contractions as one word (am, im) and land the noun with its dative article clearly: an der Wand, auf dem Tisch, unter dem Tisch. One phrase for existence rounds it off: Es gibt auch einen großen Schrank — es gibt always takes the accusative, whatever the room.

Position = dative

Describing where things are: steht / liegt / hängt + an der, auf dem, im, neben dem. Say the article clearly; it carries the case, and the case carries the meaning.

an Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

Das Bett steht an der Wand. Über dem Bett hängt ein Bild. The bed stands against the wall. A picture hangs above the bed.
Unter dem Tisch liegt ein Teppich. There is a rug under the table.

es gibt + accusative

In meinem Zimmer gibt es einen Schrank, ein Bett und zwei Stühle. es gibt introduces what exists and always takes the accusative.

Es gibt auch einen großen Schrank. There is also a big wardrobe.
In der Küche gibt es einen Tisch und einen Kühlschrank. In the kitchen there's a table and a fridge.
