Kleidung & Einkaufen

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Walk into a German shop, ask for your size, try something on and say 'Das steht mir!' before you pay.

  1. 1passen and stehen take the dative
  2. 2The shop script
  3. 3Sizes, materials, and zu
  4. 4tragen / anziehen / anprobieren
Why this matters

Buying clothes follows a small, predictable script: finding the department, saying what you are looking for, the size, the colour, trying it on, and the two verbs that decide the sale — passen (fit) and stehen (suit), both with the dative: Die Hose passt mir nicht. Das Kleid steht dir gut. The clothing nouns come with their genders (die Hose, das Hemd, der Rock, der Mantel, das Kleid), and in the shop you will hear them with a colour in front — der blaue Schal, eine rote Jacke. Copy those phrases as chunks for now; the endings on blaue and rote are explained in the adjective quiz a little further on in this module. Shop phrases: Ich suche … Haben Sie das in Größe 40? Kann ich das anprobieren? Wo ist die Umkleidekabine? Ich nehme es.
