Körper & Gesundheit

Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min

Say what hurts, since when, and understand what the doctor tells you. That's a whole visit to the doctor in German.

  1. 1Complaints: haben + …schmerzen, tut weh, sein + adjective
  2. 2seit + dative: how long
  3. 3The doctor's side
  4. 4Praxis → Rezept → Apotheke
Why this matters

Sooner or later everyone living in Germany needs a doctor, and the visit follows a fixed script: saying what hurts and since when, hearing the diagnosis, getting a prescription, going to the pharmacy. The vocabulary sits in three groups. Complaints: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen / Bauchschmerzen / Halsschmerzen / Fieber / Husten / Schnupfen / eine Erkältung; Mein Bein tut weh. The people and places: der Arzt / die Ärztin, die Praxis, die Apotheke, das Krankenhaus. The things: das Rezept (prescription), das Medikament, die Tablette, die Krankenkasse (health insurance), die Versichertenkarte. Two grammar chunks carry the dialogue: seit + dative for how long (seit drei Tagen) and Sie müssen / Sie sollten for the doctor's advice.
