Lesson · 3 rules · about 3 min

Fill in any German form without slips: surname first, dates as day.month.year, and the note that hides the deadline.

Why this matters

A registration form, filled in — for a language course, but the fields are the same on every German form you will ever meet: Name / Vorname (surname / first name — in that order!), Geburtsdatum (date of birth, written day.month.year), Geburtsort, Staatsangehörigkeit (nationality — as an adjective: bulgarisch, deutsch), Adresse with the postcode before the town, Muttersprache, Unterschrift (signature), Datum. Sooner or later you fill one in yourself — at the town hall, the doctor's, the gym — and reading one carefully is the first half of that. The traps are conventions rather than words: German dates are 12.03.1995 (12 March), the family name comes first on forms, and Hinweis (note) at the bottom usually carries instructions and deadlines — bis zum 31. August — that become questions. Three dates on the form (birth, signing, course start) and one deadline in the note: read the label before the number.
