Wechselpräpositionen: Wo?
Lesson · 4 rules · about 5 min
Say where everything is — the book on the table, the cat under the bed — with nine prepositions that switch case.
- 1Wo? → Dativ: dem / der / dem / den
- 2The verbs of position
- 3The cat on the box
- 4The nine, with their meanings
Why this matters
Nine prepositions — an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen — can take either the dative or the accusative, and the sentence decides which. When they answer wo? (where is it? — a position, nothing moving), they take the dative: Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. Die Katze sitzt unter dem Bett. Das Bild hängt an der Wand. The verbs that go with this side are the verbs of being somewhere: stehen, liegen, sitzen, hängen, sein, bleiben, wohnen. This is the rule that separates a learner who knows the dative from one who can use it; the accusative half (wohin?) is the next quiz, and the two are always learnt as a pair.

Wo? → Dativ: dem / der / dem / den
No movement, just a place: auf dem Tisch, unter dem Bett, an der Wand, in der Küche, vor den Häusern. Contractions: an dem → am, in dem → im.
- auf auf dem Tisch
- unter unter dem Tisch
- in in der Kiste
- über über dem Tisch
- neben neben der Kiste
- vor vor der Kiste
- hinter hinter der Kiste
- zwischen zwischen den Kisten
- an an der Wand
- Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. The book is (lying) on the table.
- Wir sitzen im Garten, neben dem Haus. We're sitting in the garden, next to the house.
English 'on the table' is the same whether the book lies there or you put it there. German asks first: is anything moving?
