Write down a research abstract by ear and get every genitive ending and every compound noun right where the voice gives you no help.
- 1The formulas come in fixed pieces
- 2Written-language prepositions and their cases
- 3Nominal style: the verb hides in a noun
Why this matters
Twelve sentences of one research abstract, dictated: a study on whether a night’s sleep fixes what you learned the evening before. It is written in the academic register the last lessons took apart — the fixed formulas (Es ist davon auszugehen, dass … · Im Hinblick auf … · Daraus ergibt sich, dass … · kommen zu dem Ergebnis, dass … · Unter Berücksichtigung … · bedarf weiterer Untersuchung), the written-language prepositions with their cases (gemäß dem Studiendesign · mittels einer Nachbefragung · ungeachtet dieser Befunde · laut den Verfasserinnen · zwecks Überprüfung · binnen zweier Jahre), and the nominal style that packs a whole clause into a noun (die Festigung neu erworbenen Wissens · die Übertragbarkeit auf den Spracherwerb Erwachsener · die Wiedergabe von Vokabeln). Two things only the ear decides: the genitive endings inside the noun groups (erworbenen Wissens, zweier Jahre, Erwachsener) and the long compound nouns that are written as one word (Tiefschlafphasen, Stichprobengröße, Ausgangswerte, Mittagsschlaf). Type each sentence whole; punctuation is part of the task.

The formulas come in fixed pieces
Academic German is built from set phrases that a listener recognises as wholes: Es ist davon auszugehen, dass … (it is to be assumed that), Daraus ergibt sich, dass … (from this it follows that), zu dem Ergebnis kommen, dass … (to conclude that), Unter Berücksichtigung + Genitiv (taking … into account), etwas bedarf + Genitiv (something requires). Hear the opening two words and the rest of the formula is predictable — including its comma before dass.
- Es ist davon auszugehen, dass die Konsolidierung überwiegend in den Tiefschlafphasen stattfindet. It is to be assumed that consolidation takes place predominantly in the deep-sleep phases.
- Daraus ergibt sich, dass die Wiedergabe signifikant zuverlässiger ausfällt. From this it follows that recall turns out significantly more reliable.
- Die Übertragbarkeit bedarf weiterer Untersuchung. The transferability requires further investigation.
bedarf takes the genitive: bedarf weiterer Untersuchung, not bedarf weitere Untersuchung. The ending is quiet in speech, so write what the grammar demands, not what you think you heard.

Written-language prepositions and their cases
gemäß, laut and zufolge take the dative (gemäß dem Studiendesign, laut den Verfasserinnen); mittels, zwecks, ungeachtet, binnen and kraft take the genitive (mittels einer Nachbefragung, zwecks Überprüfung, ungeachtet dieser Befunde, binnen zweier Jahre). The case shows on the article or on the numeral — zweier, not zwei.
| Dativ | Genitiv | |
|---|---|---|
| gemäß dem Design | ⇄ | mittels einer Befragung |
| laut den Autorinnen | ⇄ | binnen zweier Jahre |
| dem Bericht zufolge | ⇄ | ungeachtet dieser Befunde |
- Mittels einer Nachbefragung ließ sich der Einwand ausschließen. By means of a follow-up survey the objection could be ruled out.
- Eine Replikation ist binnen zweier Jahre geplant. A replication is planned within two years.
- Laut den Verfasserinnen ist die Stichprobe die wesentliche Einschränkung. According to the authors the sample is the main limitation.

Nominal style: the verb hides in a noun
Where speech says “man festigt, was man neu gelernt hat”, the abstract says die Festigung neu erworbenen Wissens. The noun group carries a genitive attribute (erworbenen Wissens, Erwachsener) or a prepositional one (die Wiedergabe von Vokabeln, die Übertragbarkeit auf den Spracherwerb). When you take it down, the capital letters are yours to place: every nominalised verb is a noun.
- Die Festigung neu erworbenen Wissens findet im Schlaf statt. The consolidation of newly acquired knowledge takes place during sleep.
- Die Übertragbarkeit auf den Spracherwerb Erwachsener ist offen. The transferability to adult language acquisition is open.
- Ein Mittagsschlaf von zwanzig Minuten zeitigt messbare Effekte. A twenty-minute nap produces measurable effects.
Compounds are one word: Tiefschlafphasen, Stichprobengröße, Ausgangswerte, Mittagsschlaf. A space inside them is the commonest dictation error at this level.
